This can be a light hearted blog so I will share some gifts that are not typically well receive.

Bamboo – terrible gift because it lives forever and you have to take care of it. The giver will always come over and expect to see the bamboo.

Large Gifts – unless you know the person very well and if you know they want something particular. Also the person has a hard time hiding that that gave your gift away at a white elephant party.

Shag rugs – …….. you know why this is bad…..

Dying plants – Do not bring a plant that has seen better days or you bought on sale from Lowe’s that is on it’s last leg. Most people don’t have green thumbs and bringing them a plant that needs a highly skilled surgeon to repair it is pointless.

Recycled Plants – No I don’t mean made form recycled materials. I am talking about gifts that you can find no purpose for so you you re wrap them. If you think it was a useless gift (like the pink flamingo my wife once received) throw it away and don’t torture someone else with it.

Pets - Yes, people have actually brought in pets at house warming parties. Here is how that conversation might go:

Homeowner: “You didn’t have to…..”

Guest: “When I found Fido at my trashcan eating leftovers I knew he would need a good home. I thought since now you had such a big place he would have room to play here…”

Homeowner: “I am lucky to have you as a…. fr….i…e……nd…………(Sigh). What happened to your bowling game you were going to tonight?”

This blog will focus on housewarming ideas and experiences. Feel free to share your humerus housewarming stories. My wife and I just completed a renovation and addition to our house and are planning on having one big housewarming party in June 2007. Here’s some information on housewarming I found.

A housewarming party is a party held on the occasion of moving into a new residence. It is an occasion for the hosts to present their new home to their friends, and sometimes for friends to give gifts to furnish the new home. Housewarming parties are generally informal; usually there are no planned activities besides a possible tour.

Housewarming Gifts
Gifts are customary but not necessary. They usually consist of something for the new house (such as a potted plant, a vase, or a picture frame) or something to be enjoyed during the party (such as a bottle of wine, a bouquet of flowers, or a Gift basket of foodstuffs).

Variations of housewarming parties
- May be thrown upon completion of renovation or remodel.
- May be presented as an “open house” where people are free to come and go during a fixed window of time on a given day.
- May involve a potluck meal.
- Some people invite all of their new neighbors to their housewarming. This allows the hosts to meet their new community.
- In some open communities, neighbors may bring the housewarming party to the new residents to welcome them.
- When leaving a residence, some people host a house cooling party.
